  • DSC 9800  Lily-of-the-valley, is a poisonous woodland flowering plant native throughout the cool temperate.  The flower is also known as Our Lady's tears or Mary's tears from Christian legends that it sprang from the weeping of the Virgin Mary during the crucifixion of Jesus. Other etiologies its coming into being from Eve's tears after she was driven with Adam from the Garden of Eden

  • DSC 9813 Dianthus is a genus of about 300 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species extending south to north Africa, and one species in arctic North America. Common names include carnation, pink and sweet William. The name Dianthus is from the Greek words dios ("god") and anthos ("flower"), and was cited by the Greek botanist Theophrastus.

  • DSC 9864    Spiraea is too woody to be used as an edible plant, but has a long history of medicinal use by Native Americans as an herbal tea.   Spiraea shrubs contain methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) and other salicylates throughout the plant, compounds with similar medicinal properties to aspirin.

  • DSC 9852   Ohio Spiderwort.   Though sometimes considered a weed, spiderwort is cultivated for borders and also used in containers. Where it appears as a volunteer, it is often welcomed and allowed to stay.
